วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ 3 ประการ คือ 1) เพื่อศึกษาประวัติและรูปแบบ พิธีกรรมการสวดพระอภิธรรมในสังคมไทย 2) เพื่อศึกษาพิธีกรรมการสวดพระอภิธรรมพระบรมศพของบุรพกษัตริย์ไทย 3) เพื่อศึกษาคุณค่าและประโยชน์ที่พึงจะได้รับจากการมีส่วนร่วมในการสวดพระอภิธรรมพระบรมศพพระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมิพลอดุยเดช บรมนาถบพิตร   

           การวิจัยในครั้งนี้เป็นการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ ภาคเอกสาร ผู้วิจัยได้กำหนดวิธีการดำเนินการวิจัยด้วยขั้นตอนดังนี้  คือ  ศึกษาจากคัมภีร์พระพุทธศาสนา พระไตรปิฎก รวมถึงหนังสือ เอกสาร  งานวิจัย และบทความที่เกี่ยวข้อง  พร้อมทั้งศึกษาจากการมีส่วนร่วมและประสบการณ์จากการสวดพระอภิธรรม เป็นต้น  ผลจากการวิจัยพบว่า
           มูลเหตุการแสดงพระอภิธรรมเกิดขึ้นจากการที่พระพุทธเจ้านำเอาพระอภิธรรม ๗ คัมภีร์
มาแสดงโปรดพุทธมารดา ณ สวรรค์ชั้นดาวดึงส์ ส่วนรูปแบบการสวดพระอภิธรรมในสังคมไทยปัจจุบันมีอยู่ 2 แบบ  ได้แก่ 1) แบบทั่วไป หมายถึง  แบบที่ใช้สวดในงานบำเพ็ญกุศลศพเพื่ออุทิศให้แก่บุคคลธรรมดา 2) แบบทำนองหลวง หมายถึง  แบบที่ใช้สวดเฉพาะในงานพระราชพิธี คือ 
พิธีพระบรมศพ และพิธีศพที่มีความเกี่ยวเนื่องกับสถาบันพระมหากษัตริย์

           พิธีกรรมการสวดพระอภิธรรมพระบรมศพของบุรพกษัตริย์ไทยตามหลักฐานทางประวัติศาสตร์ปรากฏเป็นธรรมเนียมปฏิบัติมาตั้งแต่ครั้งสมัยอยุธยา  และพบว่ามีทำนองการสวด
อยู่ 4 ทำนอง ได้แก่ ทำนองกะ ทำนองเลื่อน ทำนองลากซุง และทำนองสรภัญญะ  

คุณค่าและประโยชน์ที่จะพึงได้รับจากการมีส่วนร่วมในการสวดพระอภิธรรมพระบรมศพพระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดช บรมนาถบพิตร  มีอยู่ 2 ประการ ได้แก่ 
คุณค่าในฐานะเป็นแบบอย่างที่ดีต่อพุทธศาสนิกชนในการจัดพิธีศพ  และคุณค่าด้านการมีส่วนร่วม

          This thesis has three objectives which are 1) to study the history and the format of the funeral chanting ritual in the Thai society, 2) to study the funeral chanting ceremony for the Royal Remains of the Great Kings of Thailand, and 3) to study the values and benefits that might obtain from participating in the funeral chanting ceremony of the late His Majesty King BhumibolAdulyadej. This research was conducted by means of the documentary qualitative research. The researcher designed the research methodology by following these steps i.e. to study from the scriptures in Buddhism, Tripitaka, including documents, researches, and relevant articles. Moreover, the researcher also studied from the participation and experience in the funeral chanting rituals. The results of this research were:

          The cause in delivering the Abhidhamma sermon occurred from the event that the Buddha brought The Seven Books of The AbhidhammaPitaka to kindly teach his mother in the second heavenly abode, Tavatimsa. However, the format of the funeral chanting ritual in the Thai society currently consisted of 2 forms which were 1) General Format means the format that is being used in the ritual as to perform religious practices for making merits to general people and 2) Royal Rhythm format means the format that is being used especially in the royal ceremony which are the royal funeral ceremony and the funeral related to the royal family only.

            For the funeral chanting ceremony for the Royal Remains of the Great Kings of Thailand, according to the historical evidence, it appeared that it was considered to be a traditional practice since Ayutthaya Kingdom period. Moreover,   it was found that there were 4 rhythms in chanting which were Ga Rhythm, Luen Rhythm, Lak Sung Rhythm, and Sorapanya Rhythm, which all of these has been called as the Royal Rhythm.

For the values and benefits that might obtain from participating in the funeral chanting ceremony of the late His Majesty King BhumibolAdulyadej consisted of 2 features which were value as norm of Buddhists on Management of Funeral Ceremonyand and value as participation the Funeral ceremony.
