บทคัดย่อภาษาไทย

                 วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่องนี้มีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อศึกษาวิเคราะห์คัมภีร์มหาวงศ์ คุณค่าของคัมภีร์และอิทธิพลของคัมภีร์มหาวงศ์  ผลการศึกษาพบว่า

                  คัมภีร์มหาวงศ์ได้รวบรวมเนื้อเรื่องมาจากดัมภีร์พุทธตาสนา ตำนานและเรื่องที่เล่าสืบกันมา เช่น คัมภีร์ที่ปวงศ์ คัมภีร์มหาวงศ์เดิม และพงศาวดารลังกา เป็นตัน มีลักษณะคำประพันธ์เป็นแบบปัชชะคือร้อยกรอง โดยมีคาถาประเภทปัฐยาวัตรมากที่สุด มีรูปแบบในการแต่งโดยใช้คาถาจำนวน 19 ชนิด คือ ปัฐยาวัตร วสันตดิลก สัทธรา อินทรวิเชียร อุเปนทรวิเชียร อินทรวงศ์ วังสัฏฐะ โอปัจฉันทสกะ อุปชาติ(กิตติ มาลา

อัททา ภัททา รามา อิทธิ และพุทธิ) มาลินี โตฎกะ มันทักกันตามัตตมยูระ ปหัสสิณีรุจิรา เวสสเทวี สัททูลวิกกีพิตะ โทธกะ อปรวัตตะ ลักษณะทางไวยากรณ์พบว่าตอนตันที่แต่งโดยพระมหานามมีลักษณะการใช้ไวยากรณ์บาลีแบบเคร่งครัด แต่เนื้อหาส่วนที่แต่งเติมในภายหลังโดยเฉพาะสมัยพระเจ้าปรักกมพาหูที่ 1 อาจได้รับอิทธิพลจากไวยากรณ์สันสกฤตบ้าง คัมภีร์มหาวงศ์ประกอบด้วยอลังการทั้งสัททาลังการและอัตถาลัง การตามที่มีความนิยมในยุคสมัยสอดคล้องกับดัมภีร์สุโพธาลังการที่แต่งขึ้นในยุคสมัยใกล้เคียงกัน และมีการใช้และการบัญญัติศัพท์ใหม่ที่เกี่ยวกับชื่อของบุคคลและสถานที่เป็นภาษาบาลีโดยเลียนเสียงเดิมบ้าง ใช้ศัพท์บาลีที่สร้งขึ้นโดยแปลจากความหมายของคำเดิมบ้าง ศัพท์บาลีผสมกับคำในภาษาอื่นและเขียนรูปภาษาบาลีบ้าง

                     คัมภีร์มหาวงศ์ให้คุณค่าทั้งด้านวรรณคดี คุณค่ด้านสังคม คุณค่าด้านประวัติศาสตร์ คุณค่าด้านการเมืองการปกครอง และคุณค่าด้านประเทืองสติปัญญา

                     คัมภีร์มหาวงศ์มีอิทธิพลต่อคัมภีร์วรรณคดีบาลีที่แต่งในประเทศไทยหลายคัมภีร์ได้แก่ คัมภีร์ชินกาลมาลีปกรณ์ คัมภีร์จักกวาฬทีปนี คัมภีร์มังคลัตถทีปนี คัมภีร์สังคีติยวงศ์ คัมภีร์ปฐมสมโพธิ โดยเนื้อหาที่มีอิทธิพลมากที่สุด คือ การเผยแผ่ พระพุทธศาสนาในลังกาทวีป สำหรับอิทธิพลของคัมภีร์มหาวงศ์ต่อประเพณีไทยได้แก่ ประเพณีการสวดมนต์พระปริตรและการสวดพระอภิธรรม ประเพณีการบูชาพระสถูปเจดีย์ ประเพณีการบูชารอยพระพุทธบาท ส่วนอิทธิพลของคัมภีร์มหาวงศ์ต่อวัฒนธรรมไทยนั้นพบว่า ด้านสถาปัตยกรรมไทย คัมภีร์มหาวงศ์มีอิทธิพลต่อการสร้างวัดหลายแห่ง เช่น วัดโพธารามหรือวัดเจ็ดยอด วัดช้างล้อมวัดมเหยงค์ วัดมหาธาตุ ด้านประติมากรรมไทยได้รับอิทธิพลเรื่องการสร้างพระพุทธรูปโดยเฉพาะในช่วงพุทธศตวรรษที่ 16-20 และด้านจิตรกรรมไทยได้รับอิทธิพลเรื่องจิตรกรรมเกี่ยวกับพุทธประวัติ โดยเฉพาะการวางองค์ประกอบของจิตรกรรมฝาผนัง

บทคัดย่อภาษาอังกฤษ

                  The aim of this thesis is to analytically study the Mahavamsa, its value and influence.

                    From the study, It is found that The Mahavamsa has collected the details from the Buddhist Scriptures, The texts and the stories such as the DIpavamsa and Sri Lanka geneology etc. Most of the verses are of Pathyavatta. The form of composition is of 19 kinds :- namely, Pathyavatta,Vasantatilaka, Saddhara, Indaravajira, Upenadaravajira, Indaravamsa, Vamsattha, Opacchandasaka, Upajati (Kitti, Mālā, Addā, Bhaddā, Rāmā, Iddhi, and Buddhi),MāinI Totaka, Mandakkanta, Mattamayura, pahassinI, Rujira, vessadevi,saddulavikkJita, dodhaka, aparavatta. Then, from the Grammartical appearance, it is found that the first part composed by Venerable Mahanama use Pali Grammartical rules strictly, but the later parts especially in King Parakkamapahu I's period might recieve the influence from Sanskrit Grammar. The Mahavamsa consists of the embellishment (alankara) and the substance embellishments according to the favor at the age which corresponded to the Subhodhalankara which composed in nearby period. In which there was the way of using and laying down the new words about the name of person and place that in Pali by copying the old sound or using Pali word built by the translation from the meaning of old words, together with the Pali words, other words written in Pali language.

                   The Mahavamsa is valuable in the matter of literature, society, history,politics, administration, mindfulness and wisdom. Moreover the Mahavamsa is influential to many Pali Literary Scriptures written in Thailand such as the Jinakalamaipakarana, the Cakkavaladipan, the MangalatthadipanI, the Sangttiyavamsa, and the Pathamasambodhi. The most influential parts are propagations of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. The influence of the Mahavamsa to the Thai tradition is the influential to Visakhapija and Asalhapija Day, Paritta and Abhidhamma chanting festival, the ceremony of worshipping the stupa and worshipping the Buddha's footprint. Regarding the influence of the Mahavamsa to Thai tradition, it is found that it has influence to many temple in Thai architecture such as Wat Potharam or Wat Jetyod, Wat Changlom, Wat Maheyong, and Wat Mahathat. Then, the Thai sculpture gets the influence from creating the Buddha Image especially in the Buddhist century 16-20. Regarding the Thai painting, there is the influence of planting about the Buddha's biography, especially the establishment of the wall painting.
