บทคัดย่อภาษาไทย

The main objective of the research is to focus on the experience of life by monks and nuns in Thich Nhat Hanh’s tradition through their approach to mindfulness practice in daily lives or applied mindfulness. The approach of this practice has a distinct feature which is using mindful breathing as a main activity to give rise to mindfulness. The mindful breathing will be combined in all activities to form associative learning that is similar to the theory of classical conditioning, which is part of behaviourism in psychology.

The research uses phenomenological analysis to step into the lived-experienced and consciousness of the monks’ and nuns’ lifeworld (Lebenswelt), which is a self-evident phenomenon. The sampling method used simple sampling snowball sampling from key informants to conduct an in-depth interview. The collected data was analyzed by using NVivo to produce emerging themes and synthesize them into a meaningful expression to create the essence of the experience phenomena.

The three main emerging themes are, first, the essence of applied mindfulness, which is the core practice of bringing the mind to the present moment. The second is the way to practice applied mindfulness by combining mindful breathing with daily activities, either scheduled or unscheduled. Last, the impacts of the practice bring affective benefits related to emotion regulation, the interpersonal benefits that improve their relationships with other people.

               The result of the research can be used as the foundation of a spiritual quest and to encourage the monastic community and many people to cope with their challenges in daily life. Since the practice proposed by Thich Nhat Hanh emphasized blending into daily life, then it can be applied in various areas such as families, schools, workplaces, and other communities that are open to adopting it.
