In this dissertation, the objective of this study is threefold: 1) To study the Problems, Causes, and Impacts of Wrong Speech in Present Society; 2) To study the Right Speech in Theravada Buddhist Scriptures; and 3) To present the Ways of the Practice of Buddhist Right Speech in Present Society. The researcher employed qualitative research of primary documents and six scholars' in-depth interviews.
The findings detailed the connotations and denotations of Right Speech, including abstaining from false, divisive, abusive, and frivolous speech. False speech is that one can lose three things: trust, love, and respect. It is said that a harsh word can wound more deeply than weapons, whereas a gentle word can change the heart and mind of the most hardened criminal. The world today is plagued by various conflicts: ethnic, racial, religious, ideological, and those in social media. According to the Abhidhamma point of view, the Buddha expounded that these four forms of Wrong Speech are all due to the three roots of greed, hatred, and delusion. Examining passages from the Pāli Canon shows that Right Speech is normatively truthful, gentle, beneficial, timely, and with a mind of loving-kindness. Right Speech is essential in present society. The practice of Right Speech has never been easy, but to be harmonious and communicate in the present society, reduce false speech and hate speech, and must speak with love and mindfully. This research primarily examined Buddhist right speech based on the Pāli Canonical text, commentaries, and sub-commentaries.
