บทคัดย่อภาษาไทย

             วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่อง “การศึกษาวิเคราะห์บทบาทของท้าวมหาราชทั้ง 4 ในอาฏานาฏิยสูตร” นี้ มีวัตถุประสงค์ ๓ ประการ คือ (1) เพื่อศึกษาโครงสร้างและเนื้อหาของอาฏานาฏิยสูตร (2) เพื่อศึกษาบทบาทของท้าวมหาราชทั้ง 4 ในอาฏานาฏิยสูตร (3) เพื่อศึกษาวิเคราะห์บทบาท ของท้าวมหาราชทั้ง 4 ในอาฏานาฏิยสูตร วิทยานิพนธ์นี้เป็นงานวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ โดยศึกษาข้อมูลจากคัมภีร์พระไตรปิฎกและเอกสารที่เกี่ยวข้อง 

                     ผลการวิจัยพบว่า

          อาฏานาฏิยสูตรเป็นพระสูตรว่าด้วยเรื่องของท้าวมหาราชทั้ง 4 พระสูตรนี้ เป็นพระสูตรขนาดยาวเป็นพระสูตรที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการนำเอาอาฏานาฏิยมนต์เข้าถวายพระพุทธเจ้าโดย ท้าวมหาราชทั้ง 4 โดยในตัวพระสูตรหรือเนื้อหาในอาฏานาฏิยมนต์จะมีเนื้อหาอยู่ 5 ตอนคือ (1) เรื่องพระพุทธเจ้า 7 พระองค์ (2) เรื่องท้าวมหาราชในทิศทั้ง 4 (3) เรื่องอุตตรกุรุทวีปของ ท้าวเวสวัณ (4) เรื่องผลที่เกิดและวิธีปฏิบัติในมนต์อาฏานาฏิยะ (5) พระผู้มีพระภาคทรงสรุปเรื่องนอกจากนั้น ก็เป็นเรื่องที่เกี่ยวข้องกับวิธีการในการใช้มนต์บทนี้ในการสาธยายเพื่อให้เกิดประโยชน์โดยสิ่งที่จะทำให้มนต์เกิดผลก็คือ (1) สถานที่สวด (2) ผู้สวดจะต้องมีศีล และ (3) ผู้สวดจะต้อง แผ่เมตตาก่อนสวดทุกครั้ง

             ในการศึกษาบทบาทของท้าวมหาราชทั้ง 4 ในอาฏานาฏิยสูตร พบว่า (1) ท้าวมหาราช ทั้ง 4 มีกำเนิดมาจากการทำเหตุ 3 ประการคือ (1) บุญกิริยาวัตถุ (2) การถือพระรัตนตรัยเป็นสรณะ (3) การทำบุญแล้วตั้งจิตอธิษฐาน ส่วนบทบาทของท้าวมหาราชทั้ง 4 นั้นมีอยู่ทั้งหมด 3 ด้าน ได้แก่ (1) บทบาทในการคุ้มครองพระพุทธเจ้า (2) บทบาทที่มีต่อพุทธบริษัท 5 (3) บทบาทในโลกสวรรค์   ผลจากการวิเคราะห์เรื่องของบทบทของท้าวมหาราชทั้ง 4 พบว่ามีบทบาทสำคัญอยู่ 3 ประการคือ (1) บทบาทด้านการอุปถัมภ์และคุ้มครองพระพุทธศาสนา (2) บทบาทด้านการตรวจดูโลกและ (3) บทบาทด้านการปกครองอมนุษย์ นอกจากนั้น

             จะพบว่าผลจากการวิเคราะห์บทบาทท้าวมหาราชทั้ง 4 ก่อให้เกิดคุณค่าในเรื่องต่าง ๆ ดังต่อไปนี้ (1) คุณค่าเรื่องของการเรียนรู้หลักธรรมอันได้แก่ (1.1) การเรียนรู้หลักคำสอนเรื่องกรรม (1.2) การเรียนรู้หลักคำสอนเรื่องบุญ (1.3) การเรียนรู้หลักคำสอนเรื่องเมตตา (2) คุณค่าเรื่องของการสวดมนต์ (3) คุณค่าด้านสังคม (4) คุณค่าด้านการศึกษา

บทคัดย่อภาษาอังกฤษ

          This thesis is entitled “An Analytical Study of the Roles of the Four Great Kings (Mahārāja) in the Āṭānāṭiya-Sutta”, which consists of three objectives, namely, 1) to study the structure and essences of the Āṭānāṭiya-Sutta, 2) to study the roles of the Four Great Kings in the Āṭānāṭiya-Sutta, and 3) to analytical study the roles of the Four Great Kings in the Āṭānāṭiya-Sutta. This study was a qualitative research by finding data from the Buddhist Scriptures and related documents.

            The findings of this research were as follows:

           The Āṭānāṭiya-Sutta was the Discourse on the Four Great Kings, this Sutta was described in the Long Discourse of Buddha which related to taking the poem for protection from evil spirits presented to the Lord Buddha by the Four Great Kings. The discourse or content in Sutta consists of five issues, they are; (1) Homage to the seven Buddhas, (2) The four directions from the Great Kings, (3) the land of Uttarakuru (the Northern continent) of Vessavaṇa, (4) the results and the method of practising Āṭānāṭiya reciting, and (5) the part of summary by the Lord Buddha. Besides, it was also related to how to apply this discourse from recitation for benefit. What will make the discourse effective were: (1) the recited place, (2) the recital will be recited by a virtuous person, and (3) the recitation must always recite the loving-kindness before.

          The study of the roles of the Four Great Kings in the Āṭānāṭiya-Sutta found that (1) there were three origins of birth as the four Great Kings; (1) the bases of meritorious action, (2) the belief in the Triple Gem, and (3) after making merit have to be established in mind. Therefore, there are four roles of the four Great Kings; (1) the role of protecting Buddha, (2) the role towards the four assemblies, and (3) the role in heaven.

           The result of the analysis of the roles of the Four Great Kings in the Āṭānāṭiya-Sutta found that there were three important roles; (1) the role of promotion and protection of Buddhism, (2) the role of observation of the world, and (3) the role of non-human’s governance. Moreover, the result of the analysis of the roles of the four Great Kings affected various values as follows: 1) the value of learning Buddhist principles; (1.1) the principle of the law of Kamma, (1.2) the principle of meritorious action, and (1.3) the principle of loving-kindness, 2) the value of recitation, 3) the value of society, and 4) the value of education.
