บทคัดย่อภาษาไทย

          วัตถุประสงค์ของวิทยานิพนธ์เล่มนี้ คือ (1) เพื่อศึกษาความเชื่อเรื่องการถวายประทีปในพระพุทธศาสนา (2) เพื่อศึกษาความเชื่อการถวายทานประทีปในล้านนา และ (3) เพื่อวิเคราะห์ สาระธรรมที่ปรากฏในความเชื่อเรื่องการถวายทานประทีปของชาวพุทธในล้านนา เป็นการศึกษาโดยการใช้ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ ใช้วิธีการเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลจากพระไตรปิฎก เอกสารงานวิจัยและจากการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกผู้ให้ข้อมูลสำคัญ จำนวน 24 รูป/คน ใช้เครื่องมือการสัมภาษณ์แบบมีโครงสร้าง จากนั้นนำมาวิเคราะห์เนื้อหา และนำเสนอในรูปแบบพรรณนา

          ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ประทีป หมายถึง เครื่องสักการะบูชาประเภทหนึ่งในพระพุทธศาสนา เป็นเครื่องจุดทำให้เกิดแสงสว่าง ได้รับอิทธิพลมาจากศาสนาพราหมณ์ ประเทศอินเดีย การถวายทานประทีป มีความเชื่อว่าเป็นการถวายทานสักการะพระรัตนตรัย บูชารอยพระพุทธบาทที่ริมฝั่งแม่น้ำนัมมทานทีที่ประเทศอินเดีย อีกทั้งยังเป็นการสักการะต่อพระเกศแก้วจุฬามณีที่ประดิษฐานอยู่บนสวรรค์ชั้นดาวดึงส์ และยังเชื่อว่าเป็นการบูชาพระพุทธเจ้าในวันเสด็จกลับจากเทวโลก

ชาวล้านนามีความเชื่อเรื่องการถวายประทีปจากวรรณกรรมที่จารึกไว้บนใบลาน เรียกว่า ธัมม์ ธัมม์ที่กล่าวถึงพิธีการถวายทานประทีปมี ๒ คัมภีร์ คือ ๑) ธัมม์กาเผือก ที่มีคติความเชื่อเรื่องการบูชาความกตัญญู และ ๒) ธัมม์อานิสงส์การถวายทานผางประทีป ที่มีคติความเชื่อเรื่องอานิสงส์จะทำให้มีผิวพรรณที่แจ่มแจ้งดุจแสงของประทีป จะเป็นผู้มีปัญญาเฉลียวฉลาด มีทรัพย์มาก นอกจากนี้  การบูชาผางประทีปยังมีเชื่อว่าเป็นการบูชาตามธัมม์คาถาพันธนาที่ปรากฏในการจัดตั้งธัมม์หลวง   อีกด้วย 

          สาระธรรมที่ปรากฏในความเชื่อเรื่องการถวายทานประทีปของชาวพุทธในล้านนา ได้แก่ 1) หลักศรัทธา เพราะการถวายประทีปเป็นการแสดงออกถึงความศรัทธาในพระพุทธศาสนาอย่างลึกซึ้งของชาวล้านนา 2) หลักกตัญญูกตเวที เนื่องจากการถวายประทีปเป็นสัญลักษณ์แห่งความกตัญญูที่ปรากฏในเรื่องแม่กาเผือก และ 3) หลักการบูชา เพราะการถวายประทีปจัดเป็นอามิสบูชาในพระพุทธศาสนา อันส่งผลไปสู่การปฏิบัติบูชาด้วย นอกจากนั้น การถวายประทีปยังมีคุณค่าในด้านความเป็นประเพณีที่ดีงาม อันแสดงออกถึงอัตลักษณ์ของชาวล้านนา ซึ่งได้รับความสนใจในเชิง     การท่องเที่ยว การอนุรักษ์วัฒนธรรม การส่งเสริมพระพุทธศาสนา อันส่งผลต่อความเจริญเติบโตทางด้านเศรษฐกิจอีกด้วย

บทคัดย่อภาษาอังกฤษ

           The purposes of this thesis are: (1) to study the belives of offering lantern in Buddhism, (2) to study the beliefs of offering lantern in Lanna, and (3) to analyze the Dhamma contents in belief of offering lantern of the Buddhists in Lan na. This study is a qualitative research methodology using the method of collecting Tripitaka, research papers and In-Depth interviews with 24 Buddhist monks and people, scholars and general villagers by having structured In-Depth interviewing tools and analyzing the content with presenting in a descriptive style.

          The results of this research found that Lantern means the sacrifice in Buddhism which is the igniter leading to the light it has been influenced by Brahminism in India. The offering of lantern is believed that it is the offering to pay respect to Triple Gem, worshiping the Buddha's footprint on the bank of the Nammanthanee River in India, and it is also a homage to Phra Ket Kaew Chulamanee that enshrined in the Tavatimsa Heaven and is still believed to be worshiping the Lord Buddha on the day of his return from the world.

          Lanna people have faith in offering lantern from literature that inscribed on the palm leaves called Dhamma. The Dhamma mentioned  the ceremony for offering lantern there are two scriptures, including 1) Dhamma Ka Phuak that has the belief of worshiping gratitude, 2) Dhamma’s benefits of the lantern offering to make the skin look like the light of the lamp, it will be a wise person with a lot of wealth. In addition, the worship of lantern is still believed to be worshiped according to Dhammagãthãban that appears in the establishment of Dhamma Luang. (Story of Gautama Buddha as Vessantara Jataka sermon) as well.

          Dhamma content that appears in the beliefs of offering lanterns of Buddhists in Lanna, including 1) the principle of worship because the offering lanterns that is Āmisa-pūjā in Buddhism which resulted in the practice of worship as well, 2) the principle of gratitude because the offering lantern is a symbol of gratitude that appears in the story of Mae Ka Phuak, and 3) the principle of belief because the offering lantern is an expression of the deep faith in Buddhism of the Lanna people. In addition, the offering lantern is also valuable in terms of being traditionally good which expresses the identity of the Lanna people and has been interested in tourism, cultural conservation, Promotion of Buddhism affecting the economic growth as well.
