บทคัดย่อภาษาไทย

 วิทยานิพนธ์นี้ มีวัตถุประสงค์ 3 ประการ คือ (1) เพื่อศึกษาปุพพเปตพลีในคัมภีร์พระพุทธศาสนา (2) เพื่อศึกษาประเพณีตานก๋วยสลากของชาวเหนือ และ (3) เพื่อสังเคราะห์หลักธรรมที่ปรากฏในประเพณีตานก๋วยสลาก การวิจัยเป็นเชิงคุณภาพ โดยการศึกษาข้อมูลจากคัมภีร์พระพุทธศาสนาเถรวาท และหนังสือวิชาการอื่น ๆ ที่เกี่ยวข้อง

 ผลการศึกษาวิจัยพบว่า ปุพพเปตพลี คือการทำบุญอุทิศส่วนกุศลไปให้หมู่ญาติผู้วายชนม์ เป็นการแสดงออกถึงกตัญญูกตเวทิตาธรรม ปุพพเปตพลีมีต้นเรื่องมาจากพระเจ้าพิมพิสารได้ถวายพระเวฬุวันให้เป็นที่ประทับของพระพุทธเจ้าและภิกษุสงฆ์ ครั้นต่อมาทรงอุทิศกุศลให้แก่เหล่าเปรตญาติของพระองค์

   ประเพณีตานก๋วยสลากของชาวเหนือเป็นการทำบุญ ตามแบบอย่างปุพพเปตพลี เป็นประเพณีของชาวเหนือ ประเพณีทำบุญเช่นนี้ ภาคใต้ เรียกว่าสารทเดือน 10 ชิงเปรต ภาคกลางเรียกว่าสารทไทย ภาคอีสานเรียกว่าทำบุญข้าวสาก เป็นต้น

  หลักธรรมที่ปรากฏในพิธี คือกตัญญูกตเวทิตาธรรม, สังคหวัตถุ, บุญกิริยาวัตถุ, และสามัคคีธรรม อันเป็นเครื่องแสดงออกถึงความกตัญูรู้คุณของผู้วายชนม์และตอบแทนท่าน ทั้งถือเป็นกิริยาวัตถุด้วย เป็นหลักสังคหวัตถุที่เชื่อมสามัคคีระหว่างผู้มาทำบุญ เปิดโอกาสให้ประชาชนได้มารู้จักกันและคุ้นเคยกับภิกษุสามเณร เป็นสามัคคีธรรมนำให้เกิดสันติสุขในชุมชนนั้น ๆ

บทคัดย่อภาษาอังกฤษ

This thesis entitled “An Analytical Study on Dedicating Merit to the Departed according to the Tan Kuay Salak Ritual” is of the three objectives, viz. : (1) to study the dedicating merit to the departed in the Buddhist scriptures; (2) to study the  Tan Kuay Salak Ritual of the Northern people; and (3) to synthesize Buddhist doctrines as found in the Tan Kuay Salak Ritual. Research methodology is a qualitative research.

The research resear’ result was found that: Pubbapetabalī is a ritual on dedicating merit to the relatives departed, having expressed their gratitude of what they had done before death. The ritual of this kind is supposed to be successive from King Bimbisara, who, having given Veluvana to the Buddha and his disciples, dedicated merit to his relatives departed.

Tan Kuay Salak ritual is a form of merit-making of the Northern Thai people according to Pubbapetabali. Such a ritual is also performed other part of Thailand  Southern region, as called Sarth Duansip Chingpret; in Central region, as called Thai Sarth; and in Northeastern region, as called Tham Boon Khaosak, etc.

                  Buddhist doctrines as shown in ritual are of  Kataññūkatavedi - one who is thankful for benefits received and reciprocates them; Saṅgahavatthu  principles ofservice and social integration; Puññakiriyāvatthu – bases of meritorious action; and Sāmaggi – unanimity. All these teachings bring people to join together, offering donation to the monks and novices whomwhich they are accustomed to. Results of the ritual enrich happiness and peace to the community.
