บทคัดย่อภาษาไทย

วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้ มีวัตถุประสงค์ 3 ประการ คือ 1) เพื่อศึกษาพิธีกรรมศพของพุทธศาสนิก ชน ในสังคมไทยอดีต 2) เพื่อศึกษาพิธีกรรมศพของพุทธศาสนิกชนในสังคมไทยปัจจุบัน และ 3) เพื่อเปรียบเทียบพิธีกรรมศพในอดีตและปัจจุบันของพุทธศาสนิกชนในเขตตำบลบ่อกรุ อำเภอเดิมบางนาง บวช จังหวัดสุพรรณบุรี งานวิจัยนี้เป็นการศึกษาเชิงคุณภาพ (Qualitative Research) โดยรวบรวมข้อมูลทั้งจากเอกสารและงานวิจัยที่เกี่ยวข้อง และจากการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึก (In-depth Interview)

ผลการศึกษาพบว่า

พิธีกรรมศพของพุทธศาสนิกชนในอดีต มีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อปฏิบัติตามจารีตประเพณีความเชื่อท้องถิ่น การประกอบพิธีกรรมเป็นไปด้วยความเรียบง่าย มีประโยชน์และคุณค่าของพิธีกรรมถือว่าเป็น การอุทิศส่วนกุศลและแสดงความไว้อาลัยต่อผู้ตายและความสามัคคีในชุมชน

พิธีกรรมศพของพุทธศาสนิกชนในปัจจุบัน มีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อระลึกถึงผู้ตายและบำเพ็ญบุญของผู้ยังมีชีวิตอยู่ การประกอบพิธีกรรมศพในปัจจุบัน มี 4 ขั้นตอน คือ 1) วันถึงแก่กรรม 2) วันตั้งบำ เพ็ญกุศล 3) วันฌาปนกิจศพ 4) วันหลังฌาปนกิจศพ สำหรับประโยชน์และคุณค่าของพิธีกรรม เป็นการแสดงความกตัญญูกตเวทีด้วยการทำบุญอุทิศให้ผู้วายชนม์ และสร้างกำลังใจให้กับผู้อยู่เบื้องหลัง

จากการเปรียบเทียบพิธีกรรมศพของพุทธศาสนิกชนในสังคมไทยในอดีตและปัจจุบัน พบว่ามีความสอดคล้องและเหมือนกัน ในด้านจุดมุ่งหมายและในด้านประโยชน์และคุณค่า คืออุทิศส่วนกุศลให้กับผู้ตายและสร้างกำลังใจให้กับผู้อยู่เบื้องหลัง และมีความแตกต่างกัน ในด้านการประกอบพิธีกรรมศพ โดยในปัจจุบันมีขั้นตอนที่เพิ่มขึ้นมาและบางขั้นตอนได้ยกเลิกไป เพื่อความเหมาะสมกับสภาพสัง คมในปัจจุบัน

บทคัดย่อภาษาอังกฤษ

The thesis has three objectives: 1) to study the funeral ceremony in the past of Buddhist people in Thai society, 2 to study the funeral ceremony in the present time of Buddhist people in Thai society, and 3) to comparatively study the funeral ceremony in the past and the present of Buddhist people in Bo Kru Subdistrict, Deom Bang Nang Buat District, Suphan-Buri Province. This study is of qualitative research by collecting information from documents and the related research, and from field work by participating observation and dept interview as well.

The results of the study were as follows:

The funeral ceremony of Buddhist people in Thai Society in the past had the aim at following the tradition, custom and local belief. The performing ceremony was made simply for the advantage and the value of the ceremony; it was making merit and dedicating it for the expression of condolences to the deceased ones, and the unity of community.

The Funeral ceremony in the present time of Buddhist people in Thai Society aims at recollecting ones who passed away, and making merit of ones who still live. There are four steps of performing funeral ceremony, namely, 1) on the day of death, 2, on the day of making merit, 3) on the day of cremation ceremony, and 4) on the day after cremation ceremony; for the advantage and value of ceremony, it was the expression of gratitude by making merit and dedicating it to the deceased ones and building morale to ones who live behind.

From the comparison of the funeral ceremony in the past and the present of Buddhist people in Bo Kru Subdistrict, Deom Bang Nang Buat District, Suphan-Buri Province, it was found that there are similarities on the aim of the ceremony and on the advantage and the value of ceremony, viz., making merit and dedicating it to the deceased ones and building morale to ones who live behind. But, the difference of funeral ceremony is on performance of ceremony; at present, there are some additional stages of ceremony, and some had been canceled for the appropriation of society at the present time.
