บทคัดย่อภาษาอังกฤษ

The purpose of the study was to present the thesis titled “A Phonological Study of Mon Dialect Spoken in Mawlamyine, Southern Mon State of Myanmar.” The research had two objectives: 1) to study the phonemes of Mon dialect spoken in Mawlamyine, Southern Mon State of Myanmar, 2) to analyze consonant and vowel sounds as well as tonemes of Mon dialect spoken in Mawlamyine in Mon state of Myanmar.

According to the first objective, the thesis studies the history and importance of the story of phonemes of Mon dialect spoken in Mawlamyine in Mon state of Myanmar.

According to the second objective, the study analyzes consonant and vowel sounds as well as tonemes of Mon dialect spoken in Mawlamyine in Mon State of Myanmar. This study used a qualitative approach to research focusing on a documentary method by reading and studying books and journal articles concerning the topic in question.

The result of the research was found as follows:

The study results showed that tones of the final syllable of statement realized cause to be falling or rising. The study found that there are three types of phonological words: monosyllabic words, disyllabic words, and trisyllabic words, and three types of syllables: pre-syllable, minor syllable, and significant syllable. The structure of the syllable was C₁ (C₃) (C₄) V₁ (C₂). The phonological system is composed of twenty-two consonant phonemes /p, pʰ, b, t, tʰ, d, c, cʰ, k, kʰ, Ɂ, m, n, ᶇ, s, j, h, l, r, w, y/; and seventeen vowel phonemes, while all vowels could be divided into two sets. There were ten single vowels as /i, e, ɛ, ɜ, ə, a, u, o, ɔ ɒ/; and seven glided vowels /ũ, ĕ, â, ȏ, ai, ȃi, au/. Finally, the study found four tones: (1) high falling, (2) mid falling, (3) mid-high, and (4) high abrupt.
