บทคัดย่อภาษาอังกฤษ

The objectives of this qualitative research are to 1) study the history and meaning of loanwords in the Bengali language, 2) study the adoption of loanwords in the Bengali language from the linguistics point of view, and 3) study the characteristics of loanwords and their impacts on both ancient and modern Bengali language and literature. Mainstream sources regarding loanwords in Bengali language were gathered from textbooks, and scholarly academic works such as thesis’s, academic journal, webpage, dictionaries (Bengali to Bengali dictionary, English, Perso-Arabic dictionary, and so forth). The methodology section of this research work includes research approach, research design, data collection, data analysis, and results of the research.

This research analyzed loanwords in the Bengali language through a four step process; namely, 1) the collected loanwords in the Bengali language from secondary sources were transcribed in International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA);
2) the collected loanwords were analyzed through the three perspectives; namely,
(i) phonological analysis, (ii) morphological analysis, and (iii) semantic analysis;
3) the effective influence of three languages (Persian, Arabic, and English loanwords) in the Bengali language and literature; 4) analyzed the characteristics of English words through the five modern Bengali narratives and short stories to identify the impact of English loanwords in modern Bengali language and literature as well as their influences on modern Bengali culture and lifestyle.

The result of the research was found: 1) the existence of loanwords in Bengali language from 12 languages belong to 6 origins; 2) the meaning of loanwords existing in Bengali language and transcribed them in International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA);
3) the phonological changes occurred in every language during borrowing words from another language; 4) the morphological changes occurred in Perso-Arabic, English, Portuguese and Hindi, but by the morphological characteristics, existing loanwords in Bengali lexicons with numerous grammatical forms were noun, adjective, verb, conjunction, and interjection 5) the semantic changes of loanwords in Bengali language retained intact meaning in all languages except Persian, Arabic and English as well as other semantic changes occurred different meaning, expansion, and contraction in
the case of Persian, Arabic and English loanwords; 6) Persian and Arabic words elements on the Bengali language and literature were basically impacted on culture and religion, and English words or elements on the Bengali language and literature were mostly in modern lifestyle; western culture and lifestyle.
