This research was: 1) To study the sound system of English loanwords in Burmese, and 2) To bring out the situations on additional ways to know detail about the English loanwords in Burmese.
The objective was to study the sound system of English loanwords in Burmese, and to analyze the sound system of English loanwords in Burmese. Research design was based on documentary and qualitative research. The population was the key informants and sound system of English loanwords in Burmese. Research tools were in dept-interview, books, magazines, articles and research. Data was collected and analyzed from tones in loanwords, vowels in loanwords, coda consonants in loanwords and consonants clusters in loanwords. Results of sound system of English loanwords were divided into three section (1) English segments missing from the Burmese inventories were replaced by native Burmese segments:
(2) coda obstruents were represented by laryngealized tones: (3) consonant clusters were resolved through vowel epenthesis or consonant deletion. This process of result was from the influence of the phonology native to the borrowing words.
The present study concerned the loanwords borrowed from English into Burmese,
a language that was phonologically different from English.
English loanwords undergo systematic modifications in Burmese, some reflecting aspects of native Burmese phonology and others having no correlate in Burmese phonology. This case of loanwords borrowed has implications for models of loanword phonology and suggesting that Burmese loanword occurs in a two-stage process, beginning with initial English-to-Burmese that occurs on a phoneme-to-phone basis. Segmental and syllabic structure is accounted in this way, but assignment of tone appears to be governed by a combination of Burmese tones and principles of Universal Grammar that remains to be characterized. These tones issue assignments of English loanwords in Burmese are left as an importance for the future research.
Finally, thesis was focused on the findings from analyzing data which was loanwords of tones in various phonotactic gaps which are native to Burmese, some with the idiosyncratic distributional properties, are consistently maintained in loanwords via a number of different strategies. The study provided an important data on the English loanwords in Burmese to improve that was concerned with both languages in two countries.
